Shaping Rocks for Giving a Shape to the Buildings

A major portion of the basic topographical feature is the rock. The rocks also comprise a major portion on and inside the Earth’s surface. This geographical aspect cannot be left behind when it comes to building construction. Apart from cement and bricks, rocks play a pivotal role in forming the basic structural component in buildings and other materials. Lateral pressure is given on the rock specimen, and the strength of the rock pieces is determined. The rock testing apparatus is designed in a specific way that they cater to every aspect related to the rocks as shear strength, flexibility, compressive strength, etc.
  • A specific test called the splitting test is designed to depict the tensile strength of the rock pieces. It is also known as the Brazilian test. This test requires an application of definite load along the rock surface. The instrument gives the result in terms of tensile strength.
  • Another important test depicting the strength of rocks is the bending test that measures the flexibility of rocks. It is obtained from the core rocks is the bending test. This is the test where a load is applied along with the rock piece. The load is applied until the piece bends. The actual tensile strength is given on the bottom part that gives the final result in tensile strength.
