The permeability of the soil is defined as the process of infiltration of water through the soil particles. The soil permeability forms the basis of any soil testing methods. There are various types of soil testing methods. These are used before the construction of any building comprising of soil permeability test. Several domains of engineering techniques require knowledge of the permeability of the soil. This is because of many land-related projects like the construction of dams, embankments. It can only be made successful if the permeability of the soil in a particular region is appropriate. Permeability of soil is a natural phenomenon to make way for water to pass through. Soil size and texture are some major factors associated with the porosity of the soil.

There are few ways to measure the percolation capacity inherited by the soil. One of the methods is the involvement of an apparatus, where there is a water column kept. The column is placed in such a way that it exerts pressure on the water column. The permeability of soil test is useful for measuring the percolation through the soils composed of particles like sand, silt. Another type of test is limited to fine-grained soil. The continuous infiltration decreases the pressure on the water column and gives the final result of the permeability. Apart from these, there are several advanced soil testing equipments.

This is an unconventional type of soil testing method used by geologists to have information about the soils in a particular area. The construction of structures like dams is initiated based on such test reports. In this procedure, a soil digger makes a hole in the soil and fills it with water. The time taken by the water to drain is noted.

Soil Testing Apparatus:

Special equipment is designed for measuring water percolation through the soil. This test begins with the sample being placed in a vessel having fibre coating from inside. The sample is placed inside a section with a definite pressure. The overall alterations in the sample give the result of the permeability.

Another instrument measures the coefficient of water percolation in soil with various textures. A tube-like structure is provided with the apparatus that measures the change in pressure, and a storage tank supplies required water into the sample. Final readings in the apparatus are recorded in terms of the water level inside the instrument.

Another instrument is utilized for measuring the permeability of the compact soil. The apparatus is such that it is provided valves on the upper and lower end. There is an exception in this instrument. It is in the sample. The sample has an additional layer of rocks on the upper and lower part that provides adequate drainage as the water infiltrates through the compact soil. This soil testing apparatus basically measures the rate of flow of water that is devoid of air.
