Best Uses of An Automotive Testing Kit

You take a lot of care of your automobile, but do you care the cooling system in the same way? The most probable answer is no. You don’t pay good attention to the cooling system. It is being heated by the engine and it wants a way to pressurize out. To keep things under control, the cooling fan is used to remove the heat while the pressure cap is used to maintain system pressure.

This whole process must be under control. The system must be at right temperature. Anything too hot or too cold can adversely affect the functioning of the system. The material testing equipments are very useful in this case.

Testing using an Automotive Test Equipment

Following are the requirements to test the pressure cap:

  • Vacuum hose
  • An automotive testing kit
  • Specifications from the manufacturer

Caution: You should never perform these tests on a hot or overheated engine. You should first make sure that the vehicle has cooled down completely and then do the operations.

Procedure of testing

Here is the complete procedure of testing:

  1. Start with the inspection cap. Remove it from the radiator. Check it thoroughly. It should not have any cracks or distortions. If required, you should replace the cap. Replace the seal if necessary.
  2.  First unplug the overflow hose. Now you should plug in the test kit. You can make use of the hose clamps. If you do not know which is the hose clamp, then you should check the specification manual from the manufacturer.
  3. Now you should bring the test kit to “pressure” position. You should pump until the upper limit is reached.
  4. As you reach closer to this limit, you would hear that the pressure cap is release air with some audible sound. If you hear this, then it means that the pressure cap is fine and working. If it does not release the pressure or releases it too quickly then it means that it is a faulty one. You should also test new caps by this method.
  5. This way you would be able to test the entire system for leakage.

The requirements for emission testing have been revised all over the world. The new method requires hand-held pressure pump kit. This pressure is then converted to electrical signal that can be used by the vehicle’s computer. The pressure used is in the range of 25 psi or lower. The computer then processes this electrical signal. This way we can make the necessary adjustment to keep our automobile running at optimum temperature.

Requirements for testing of sensors

  • Manufacturer specifications
  • A DVM or Digital Voltmeter
  • Vacuum pump
  • Other tools to work on sensor

Procedure of testing

  1. First inspect the system visually. You should not be able to find out any damage or cracks.
  2. Bring the computer system to emission code.
  3. Check the fuel cap for damage.
  4. Now test the sensors using the DVM.
  5. Your readings should match the data provided by the manufacturer.
