Scheme and Principle of Operation


The simplest scheme of a hydraulic machine, such as a hydraulic press, consists of two cylinders, A and B (small and large diameter), connected to each other by a tube C. Such a scheme is similar to the operation of communicating vessels.


In the small cylinder, there is a small piston of the hydraulic machine D, connected to the OKM lever, which has a fixed hinge support at point O, and in the large cylinder, there is a large piston of the hydraulic machine (plunger) E, which is integral with the platform F, on which the pressed body G is located.


The lever is operated manually or using a special motor. In this case, piston D begins to move down and exert pressure on the liquid underneath, which is transmitted to piston E and forces it, together with the table, to move until body G comes into contact with the stationary plate H.


With further lifting of the table, the process of pressing (compressing) the body G begins.


If this device is not used for pressing but only for lifting a load, i.e., represents the so-called hydraulic lift, then the fixed plate H, in this case, turns out to be superfluous and is excluded from the design.


Together with the parts indicated in the diagram, the hydraulic press is equipped with suction and discharge valves that regulate the operation of the press and a valve that protects it from rupture when the pressure increases excessively (the valves are not shown in the diagram).


The operation of a hydraulic press is explained by Pascal’s law. This talks about the hydrostatic paradox, where a cup of water added to a barrel causes it to burst.
