A Laboratory Can Be the Home to Soil Study


A strong building stands on a strong base that is often made by using soil composed of soil particles rich in the appropriate quantity of silt, clay, moisture content, and compactness. Good quality of soil should be analysed, and before building construction takes place, proper scrutiny should be done to check the strength of the soil to ascertain the amount of load that can be withstood by the soil. This can be done using some soil testing equipment. It is important to examine the interaction of the soil particles under different situations. Various types of efficient soil lab testing equipment like instruments checking for calcium carbonate presence, the colour of the soil, analysis of water content, etc., are some of the machines used for soil quality testing in the laboratory.

Collection of Soil Testing Equipment in Laboratory:

  • Measuring Atterberg Limit- This machine gives the various degrees of moisture content of various types of soil from a particular region. Studying moisture content is one of the crucial parameters required before the building construction to lay a strong foundation for buildings. The instrument allows spotting the texture difference between silt and clayey soil particles. The instrument for measuring the Atterberg limit is widely used before construction to find out about the soil’s relative strength when wet and about its expansion property. This instrument has a hollow cup-like structure attached to a measuring apparatus that measures the soil moisture followed by expansion in the laboratory.
  • Calcium Carbonate Measuring Apparatus– This test measures the calcium carbonate content in the soil quantitively. The apparatus is an amalgamation of parts like a long-sealed chamber made of acrylic. The chamber has an anodized cup attached to its ends. This portable apparatus helps in the easy measurement of calcium carbonate in soil.
  • Proctor Compactor Apparatus- This is an instrument used in the laboratory for measuring the optimum soil moisture quantity in different types of soil particles. This is the measurement taken when the soil particles become maximum dense due to water retention and has the highest dry density.
  • Colour Charts of Soil– This is quite an unconventional apparatus used in the laboratory for soil testing. This apparatus mainly consists of an internationally acclaimed chart of colours. This colour chart corresponds to the type of soil based on their chemical composition. For instance, a page on the colour chart depicts different hues of blues and greens to show that the given soil sample may be rich in silica, carbonates, and other salt precipitates. The range of colours given on the chart like 5R, 10R, 8B, 7.5G, etc., represents the various types of soil particles and their chemical composition.

Soil testing is a factor to be kept in mind before any construction process takes place on such soils. Important features of the soil defining the soil strength should be properly examined. To perform various soil tests, a wide variety of laboratory testing equipment for soil analysis are used.
