What is a Uniaxial Compression Test?
This test is a simple yet important test for measuring the strength and behaviour of the rocks. This is a form of compression test that is executed in combination with the tension test procedure. This test is a useful one as it produces a large strain. This test does not affect the original specimen. This test is used to see the asymmetry in the rock specimen under situations of tension and compression. This test is also useful for drawing a line of difference between the asymmetry produced by both tension and compression.
The uniaxial compression test is helpful for rocks that are soft and brittle in nature. The uniaxial method of a compression test is used to measure the compressive strength. It is calculated based on the maximum load capacity of the rocks and the area of cross-section.
How to Perform this Test?
This test comprises of some steps. The first step deals with the sample preparation by rock cutting machines. This machine cut the specimen rock into small pieces to measure its uniaxial compressive strength.
Next, there is a portable core drilling machine, and it prepares the core specimen for lab testing. After the core drilling, the sample pieces are finished to give the final dimensions of more than 0.001 mm. These sample pieces are then subjected to strain and stress under preserved lab conditions as a part of uniaxial testing in the rock mechanics laboratory.
